What is an EVD?

EVD stands for: External Ventricular Drain

It is an external drain used for not only Hydrocephalus but also brain injury and brain hemorrhage.  In Naya’s case, it is basically a shunt that drains into a bag/container outside of the body.

When there is an infection, all the tubing must be removed from the body.  Bacteria sticks to rubber and plastic so while IV antibiotics are running, all the tubing must be replaced and externalized otherwise there is risk of reinfection.
